Every Creeper Trail Ride Starts in Abingdon This Fall. That Changes March 31.

Where does a Virginia Creeper Trail ride start in October 2026? For anyone who rents a bike in Damascus, the answer is Green Spring Road in Abingdon.

Visit Abingdon calls biking from Whitetop down to Damascus the most common activity for first-time visitors, with outfitters shuttling riders to the top of the mountain. Hurricane Helene ended that trip in September 2024. The storm destroyed 17 miles of trail between Damascus and Whitetop Mountain and damaged 30 of the trail's 31 historic trestles, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The Abingdon-to-Damascus half stayed open. So for two riding seasons, the trail has worked in reverse, and the town at its western end has been the starting line.

That arrangement has an end date. The Forest Service says the full trail will reopen on March 31, 2027. That makes this the last fall when every shuttled Creeper ride points at Abingdon.

Damascus outfitters drive their riders to you

Visit Damascus says the open section runs "from the Start to the Heart," Abingdon to Damascus, about 17 miles. It also says bike outfitters are "providing full rental and shuttle services from their Damascus storefronts to the Abingdon trailhead." E-bikes are now allowed on the open section too.

In practice, the vans that once climbed to Whitetop now head west and drop riders at the Green Spring Road lot. The current Damascus outfitter directory shows how that business looks this season:

  • Adventure Damascus Bicycles and Sundog Outfitter, both listed at 331 Douglas Drive, are open year-round for sales, service, rentals and shuttles.
  • The Bike Station, at 401 East Third Street, is listed as open year-round for rentals and shuttles.
  • Blue Blaze Bike & Shuttle, at 226 West Laurel Avenue, is listed as open three seasons and advertises "Damascus → Abingdon" bike and shuttle bookings; its posted shop hours run March 1 to mid-November.
  • Shuttle Shack has moved to 406 Fritz Street and runs three seasons.
  • Bicycle Junction is listed as closed for the 2026 season.

The same page calls fall weekends the most popular time on the trail and suggests booking rentals and shuttles early, especially for peak fall Saturdays. Every one of those riders starts at the Abingdon end. If you're heading out from the Green Spring Road lot on a sunny October Saturday, plan on sharing the first few miles with a lot of company.

Locals get the easy direction

Starting in Abingdon has one clear advantage. Visit Damascus describes the open section as downhill from Abingdon to Alvarado, then less than a 1% grade from Alvarado on to Damascus. Shuttle riders get that direction because it's the one the vans are set up for. If you live in town, you can roll out from your own trailhead with the grade on your side. You'll just have to pedal back uphill if you ride out and back.

Here's how the landmarks line up, measured from the Abingdon trailhead:

Stop Approx. trail miles from Abingdon What's there
Abingdon trailhead, 303 Green Spring Road 0 Free parking dawn to dusk, restrooms, locomotive display
Highway 677 crossing about 2.9 Road crossing
Watauga trestle and trailhead, 24350 Watauga Road about 3.7 Long creek trestle, parking, restrooms
South Holston trestle about 7.2 Crossing over the confluence of the South and Middle Forks of the Holston
Alvarado Station, 21180 Alvarado Road about 8.6 Parking, restrooms, the Alvarado Station Outpost
Damascus Town Park about 15.5 to 17 End of the open section

The parking, restroom and locomotive details come from the Visit Damascus trail page and the Forest Service trail page. The South Holston trestle distance is worked out from the Forest Service mile log. It puts the trestle at milepoint 26.2 and the Abingdon endpoint at 33.4. The Watauga distance comes from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources wildlife trail listing. Sources disagree on the total length to Damascus. One mileage chart says 15.5 miles, while the visitor pages round it to about 17.

That gives you a few easy rides from town. A round trip to the Watauga trestle is about 7.5 miles. Going out and back to the South Holston trestle comes to roughly 14. The ride to Alvarado runs downhill on the way out, with the return climb waiting at the end.

This year, October is a lot shorter

Visit Damascus likes to say "our October is nine weeks long." The idea is that riders who start high at Whitetop and drop toward Damascus can hit peak color for the whole month, because the leaves turn at different times at different elevations.

That long season depends on the upper half, and the upper half is the part that's closed. The open section is the low stretch. The same page says color arrives earlier at the lower elevations, and that early to mid-October is often the sweet spot between Abingdon and Damascus. As of October 10, that window is open right now.

There's also a firm deadline on the rest stop at Alvarado. The Town of Abingdon manages the Alvarado Station Outpost, which stocks drinks, snacks and merchandise. It's open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., April through October. That leaves three weeks of 2026 to ride to Alvarado and buy a cold drink at the halfway point. After October, plan to carry whatever you need.

Visit Damascus also describes a "secret season" on the lower trail. Winter brings milder, more predictable weather, and once the leaves drop, the views open up for miles. The page says shuttles run year-round. Blue Blaze posts shop hours only through mid-November, though, so check with each outfitter as winter gets closer.

The downtown end of the ride

Because every shuttle ride starts in Abingdon, downtown Main Street is the town nearest the start of every trip. Visit Abingdon's fall 2026 itinerary lists Wolf Hills Coffee, The Girl & The Raven, Rendezvous International Café and Katbird's as coffee stops a few blocks from the trailhead. For dinner, the same guide names The Tavern, Sisters American Grill and Rain.

Main Street also has a newcomer. Dawn & Dusk, at 170 E. Main Street, was listed by the Washington County Chamber with a planned opening date of September 17, 2026. Its listing describes weekday breakfast and brunch that turns into a cocktail house in the evening. Its operator, Moore on Main, describes a restored downtown building with boutique loft stays upstairs. A breakfast place a short drive from the Green Spring Road lot fits neatly with an early ride.

If your ride lands on October 24, finish before late afternoon. Main Street Trick-or-Treat runs from 4 to 6:30 p.m. that Saturday, from the Abingdon Police Department to Tanner Street.

What the crews up the mountain have finished

The rebuild is moving quickly. The Forest Service awarded a $240 million contract to Kiewit Corporation to rebuild the washed-out stretch and restore every damaged trestle, and construction began in December 2025. As of the project's October 5, 2026 progress update:

  1. Permanent Bridge 41 was set on September 30, 2026.
  2. Eighteen bridges are fully complete, with decks, approach slabs and curbs installed.
  3. Fifty-one of 56 concrete bridge abutments have been poured.
  4. Bridges 18, 19, 21 and 27 are the last remaining Contech bridges to be set.
  5. Seventy-three percent of culverts have been installed.

Why wait until spring if the work wraps up sooner? The Forest Service says it wants the repaired trail to "settle" over the winter so the surface stabilizes and the drainage is working before heavy spring use. One trail-status site lists April 1, 2027 as the reopening date. The Forest Service announcement says March 31.

After that date, the outfitters will have their full 34.3-mile trail back, and Whitetop becomes a shuttle destination again. Visit Damascus is already telling riders to make plans for the 2027 season. Until then, every rental van on the trail is heading to the Green Spring Road lot in Abingdon.
