Rocky Mount State Historic Site opens its last stretch of the 2026 season tonight, Thursday, October 22, on Hyder Hill Road, and the schedule moves quickly. Ghost tours run through Saturday. Christmas decorations go up in time for tours starting Wednesday, November 4. The last daytime Christmas tour is Saturday, November 21, five days before Thanksgiving. After that, the calendar shows Candlelight Christmas evenings on two December weekends, and then the posted season is over.
So if your family usually starts holiday outings after Thanksgiving dinner, the daytime holiday tours will already be finished. Here's how the next seven weeks are laid out.
The calendar, start to finish

Look at the November rows. The daytime Christmas tours run on twelve days, all on Wednesdays through Saturdays, spread over three weeks. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26. No program is listed for that week, so the whole daytime run happens before most people have bought a turkey.
This week belongs to the ghosts
Haunting on the Mount is the evening program that opens this stretch. Rocky Mount describes it as a nighttime walk through the halls of the former Capitol of the Southwest Territory, which served from 1790 to 1792. An 18th-century interpretive storyteller tells ghost stories room by room, drawing on legend and on accounts from around the Tri-Cities.
It runs three nights only, Thursday through Saturday, 6 to 9 p.m. The official page recommends it for ages 13 and up, and every child has to be with an adult. Some regional event listings show other dates and a younger age cutoff. The museum's own page is the one to plan around, so check it for tickets before you go.
On Sunday morning, October 25, the site runs something smaller. The Behind the Scenes: Hidden Gems of the Southwest Territory tour lasts two hours, from 9 to 11 a.m., and takes no more than 10 guests. Rocky Mount says it covers restricted spaces, selected artifacts and stories usually told only among staff. With 10 spots, it may fill up before the weekend. Booking is linked from the event page.
Twelve days of Frontier Christmas, all in November
About ten days after the last ghost story, the same rooms reopen dressed for the holidays. The daytime Frontier Christmas tours are guided walks through the decorated historic halls, with a storyteller sharing Christmas tales from earlier eras. Rocky Mount bills them as family-friendly and built for all ages.
That makes November the right month for anyone with younger kids. Haunting on the Mount is pitched at teens and adults. Frontier Christmas is the daytime, everyone-welcome version of the same building.
- Week one, November 4 to 7. The first chance to see the decorations.
- Week two, November 11 to 14. The middle week. Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11.
- Week three, November 18 to 21. The last daytime holiday tours of the year, ending the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
Each listing shows a 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. window. The event pages don't list separate departure times, so call ahead or check the site before you build a Saturday around a specific hour.
The Wednesday through Saturday pattern is the same one Rocky Mount follows all season. Its posted regular hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with guided tours at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. If Sunday afternoon is your outing time, none of these programs fit it.
Four candlelit nights after the holiday
Once Thanksgiving is past, Candlelight Christmas is what's left. The first weekend is Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5. For those nights, the first tour leaves at 4:15 p.m. and the last at 8:30 p.m., and each runs about 90 minutes. The museum's page lists candlelit rooms, storytelling, Father Christmas, vendors and seasonal treats.
A second Candlelight Christmas weekend follows on Friday, December 11 and Saturday, December 12, listed from 4 to 8:30 p.m. If the first weekend of December fills up with tree lots, church programs and office parties, the second one gives families another chance. The early departures work well for kids who need to be in bed at a normal time. The late tours suit a date night.
Then the season closes
Rocky Mount posts its regular season as "March 4th through mid-December." Saturday, December 12, the last candlelight night, falls right at that mid-December edge.
That end date also wraps up a busy anniversary year at the site. The Kingsport Times-News reported in April that Rocky Mount kicked off its America 250 programming with a free family day of colonial crafts and games. Staff described more anniversary events to come, including a June Flag Day celebration and a July 4 Colonial Independence Day event. The Johnson City Press reported that the site planned a new Early Frontier Days and Colonial Trade Fair with the Overmountain Victory Trail Association for late May. WCYB also covered the spring Woolly Days and Colonial Gardens Festival, which had lamb petting and garden tours.
The October through December run is the end of that year, and it all sits within a short drive for most of Piney Flats.
If you're going on a regular day instead
Not every visit has to be a special event. Rocky Mount's hours and admission page lists standard guided admission to the historic site as:
- $12 for adults 18 to 54
- $10 for seniors 55 and older
- $8 for ages 5 to 17
The Massengill Museum Gallery has its own admission: $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for children. Children under 5 are free. Special programs may be priced differently, so check each event page for current tickets.
Lunch on 11E before or after
A daytime Frontier Christmas tour leaves time for a meal nearby, and two small businesses share an address on the highway at 5661 Highway 11E.
WJHL reported in late August that Alley Kat reopened under new owners Asher Miller and Brianna Ponder, after the former owners announced in June that it would close. As of that report, the restaurant was serving wings, Philly cheesesteaks and fries Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. It also runs a food truck and takes DoorDash orders.
At the same address, Magnolia Kay Mercantile opened early this year, according to WCYB. It sells women's clothing in sizes S through 3X, along with baked goods and pottery from local vendors. WCYB reported its hours as Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. With a gift list started in mid-November, a Wednesday Christmas tour plus a stop at the shop makes an easy afternoon.
Hours can change after a news story runs, so check with both businesses before you head over.
Hyder Hill Road is a real part of what makes Piney Flats home, and we love sharing what's going on just down the road.
